Meagan's Painting

For anyone who missed my post yesterday, I announced a new hobby of mine: PAINTING! I love it, it's so rejuvenating and relaxing! Who needs a therapist when you can paint!

So you might be wondering where I got this crazy idea to be all artsy (or maybe NOT, if you know me well!). It all started before Thanksgiving, in an attempt to :
1. Fill the boredom of my day
2. Be creative
3. Be frugal (NOT cheap) in my Christmas gift giving

So today's post is all about my sister Meagan's painting. Here it is all ready to go. I had scrap wood in the basement (previously a wooden floor mat for my desk!), and I cut it in 2 to make both Kellie and Meagan's paintings! How thrifty am I (again, NOT cheap!)?
After the wood was sealed with Kilz, I set about hashing out the branch design. Unlike Mom's painting, I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted Meagan's painting to look like. I had sketched out a design years ago (not knowing at the time that it would eventually be made!).
But before the branch could go down, I needed to put in the background. I loved the streaky-look the Kilz made on Meagan's painting, and didn't want to cover it up completely. So I added a thickening medium (you can find it at any craft store) to the paint, and spread it on with a painting knife. This is how it turned out:
Once the background was dry, I added the branch:
After the branch, came the berries (sorry I forgot to take a picture of that layer), followed by shading, roughening the edges with more color, and a thin layer of glaze. The glaze really does make the painting, it adds a really subtle shimmering affect!
And voila! Finished Painting!
And look, it even matched Meagan's outfit when she opened it on Christmas!
Oh, and Meagan's already "commissioned" me to do a few more paintings for her house too! Talk about a sweet gig, I'm gonna get paid to play!!

Surprise!!

We had a great Christmas with both our families this year. I'll try to get some pictures up soon of all the festivities, but today's post is all about the gifts I made this year.

At the beginning of the month I hinted at a gift I was working on. I had taken this picture of playing cards as a teaser of posts to come.

Any guesses yet on what it was?

Well here it is...
This year I did the unthinkable, and painted 4 creations! One each for both of our moms, and my two sisters!! I had only ever painted once before, and that was on canvas, these were all on wood (I like the wood SO much better). So if you're very critical, you probably shouldn't look at them ('cause they're not "Professional").

Anyway, today's post is all about my Mom's painting. All of my paintings started out the same way...as a pile of scrap wood! My Dad helped me build up the frame on each of them! After enduring freezing weather in my parent's shop, scary power tools, and a bruised thumb (from hitting it too many times with a hammer)...these are what I had to show for myself!

I'll try to sum up everything I did in as few words as possible. I knew I wanted Mom's painting to have a lot of texture, so I picked out rough plywood for her painting. Then I added a layer of wall spackling.

Here's what that looked like:

Since my Mom's painting was going to go down stairs in her game room, I knew I wanted to incorporate cards somehow. So I laid out a pattern that I liked.

Before I could adhere all the cards I needed to seal the wood. You can use high-end wood sealer (made specifically for paintings), but I had read quite a few tutorials that said regular old Kilz worked fine...and since I already had some, that's what I used! After the paint dried, I mod-podged all the cards in place (making sure to seal them all on both sides).

Then came the fun part! Here's the first go round:

I printed off lettering from my computer, and stenciled it onto the painting before filling it in with black paint. By far the most tedious part!

Then I added the heart to the center, painted the sides, and roughened up all the edges with more paint. All finished!

Here was Mom on Christmas after she opened it!

I'll try to post pictures of the other three paintings in the next couple days (along with all the other Christmas pictures!).

The Final 3

Merry Christmas everyone!

I hope you've all enjoyed my Christmas movie selections! Trust me when I say it was hard to narrow it all down to just 25! That being said, here are my final 3 movies:

#23 Elf

A completely original an awesome movie! I love Buddy, he's perfect!

#24 The Santa Clause
I'm partial to the first movie over the sequels.

#25 The Sound of Music
To all you nay-sayer's out there, I know this isn't technically a Christmas movie. But they do play the music at Christmas time, and my family always watches this movie during the holidays...so for me, this movie is all about Christmas!

I hope you've been able to watch some of your favorite Christmas movies this year too! It's not too late to go watch one now!

Casey's Movie Picks

In honor of my husband being home, I've decided to post a few of his favorite "Christmas" movies. I use parenthesis, 'cause I'm not really sure I can qualify them as Christmas flicks.

We always have a huge debate every year on weather these movies should really be considered Holiday worthy. Casey vehemently argues YES...'cause there is Holiday music and themes surrounding each movie. I usually argue NO...'cause there is an abundance of boobs, cursing, and violence (Side Note: one boob= TOO many).

But no matter what I say, we always end up watching these movies. I usually give in, especially after he's sat through all my foo-foo girl Christmas movies! So here they are:

#20 Die Hard
Cocaine, office sex, and gunmen...what about that doesn't say "Christmas"(sarcasm implied)!

#21 Lethal Weapon
Another movie filled with drugs! This time it's heroine, coupled with prostitutes, rogue ex-special agents, and MORE guns!

#22 Nightmare Before Christmas
I realize there aren't any boobs in this flick, and compared to the other 2 movies it's very tame...But the whole movie gives me the heebie-geebies! Especially when the little kid pulls the shriveled head out of the box...ewww!

Christmas Movie Catch-Up!

Sorry to everyone who might have been waiting for blog posts from me this weekend...I took a much needed hiatus from the computer. But now I'm back, and I'm ready to catch-up the last few days!

Today's selections are quintessential Christmas classics, and I can't imagine not watching them (or at least one of them) during the holidays!

#17: Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer I love all the misfit toys...and especially Yukon Cornelius with all his cute little puppies! What a great story!

#18 Frosty the Snowman
It seems like every great cartoon or kid's movie has a lovable sidekick animal. In Frosty, it's Hocus Pocus...the cute little rabbit that's pulled out of the magicians hat

#19 Santa Clause is Coming to Town

Three Words: Mayor Burgermeister Meisterburger! I love that name! Major props to anyone who ever names their kid this! But he isn't my favorite character, that honor goes to Topper, the comical penguin who lost his way to the south pole!

#16 It's a wonderful Life

I absolutely love how the whole premise of this movie is about being grateful for ALL the blessings in your life; the small and the big! Even with money being tight around the holidays, we should take time to thank God for abundantly blessing each of us.

So here's a small smattering of things I'm thankful for:

For my loved ones near and far...for a God that moves through every aspect of my life...for a Lord who believes in me, when I don't believe in myself...for small comforts in life (like pizza and chocolate!)...for the BIBLE, that guides and comforts me daily...for being able to fit in last years jeans!!!...for the BEST husband in the world...for two puppies that keep me on my toes....and for a Savior who loves me.

I could go on and on!! I hope during this season of love, you will be able to see ALL the reasons why you too are abundantly blessed!

#15 The Nutcracker

So before I get started, let me just say, if you've never seen an on-stage version of the Nutcracker, you are seriously missing out! It's a wonderful ballet! And if you're poor like me, you can still watch it, cause PBS is usually playing it during this time of year too.

But if you aren't into the prancing men in leotards, then I suggest watching one of the many movie versions! From live action to cartoon, there are a plethora to choose from. Heck, I think Barbie even has a version! Oh and a new 3D version was just released this last month (no word yet on how good it is, but worth a look).

Bootie-call

HA HA! I love that title!

Seriously though, I need some new booties this Christmas (hint hint)! As you can see from the picture. I bought these VERY worn-in house shoes two years ago at Walmart, and they've been wonderful. But the dreaded time has come to buy new ones. I only hope I can find some SUPER comfy ones. Regardless of what I get, they will never be better than my faithful "OU" booties.

Oh, and if you dis my team in the comment bar, be prepared to be deleted! Just saying :)

#14 Charlie Brown Christmas

Who doesn't remember growing up with this Christmas classic!?! I mean, come on! It's CHARLIE BROWN!!

I have to admit though, I'm not a huge Charlie Brown fan. Perhaps it has something to do with not growing up in the 50's, or being over-exposed to 80's fast-action cartoons, OR getting annoyed by all of Charlie Brown's mopping and complaining. What ever the reason, I don't always watch ALL the specials they have on TV.

BUT I do always watch the Christmas Show! Why? Because of this scene:

Truth be told, when it comes to Christmas Movies, this one really is at the top of my list. It's one of the few Christmas Movies out there that gives recognition and praise to Jesus our Savior! And that, in my book, is the most important thing about the holidays!

Oh, and I just noticed this today: Watch the clip again, and at 0:34 when Linus says "Fear Not!" he drops his security blanket!! Talk about profound meaning!

#12 and 13 of My 25 Days of Christmas-Movies

Home Alone 1 and 2

For those of you who are new to my blog; I'm compiling a 25 days of Christmas-Movies list! Last year my husband and I actually watched all these good movies (that's right 25 movies...25 days!), and this year I thought I would share them all with you!

So today's movies are right out of my childhood...HOME ALONE 1 and 2!!!! How could anyone resist these two wonders? They're hilarious! Having grown up with a HUGE extended family, I know how it feels to be "lost in the crowd" and NEVER get that coveted piece of cheese pizza! But I don't think I would have been so cool if I were left at home by myself over the holidays! Especially not if my house were being broken into!

Speaking of which, I love Marve and Harry (better known as the "wet bandits"), and all the torture they put themselves through! From being shot in the eye, to a branded hand, to the paint cans in the face, these two were certainly dedicated in there foiled attempts!

But I also love how these movies are all about showing those you love how much you care! And the lengths you'll go to prove it!

#11 The Muppet Christmas Carol

When it comes to all the Christmas Carol movies (and lets face it, there are a TON of them), I only really like one...THIS ONE! The Mickey Mouse/Disney version is okay too, but I don't really care for the live action versions. Why? Cause they're scary...and depressing...and sad.

BUT the Muppet's, they add music, and cute little anecdotes to make this movie a hit! I love all the slap-stick comedy and adorable idiosyncrasies they tie in to the movie. Plus all the characters are great! But if I had to choose favorites it would be these two:
Rizzo the Rat and the Great Gonzo as Charles Dickens! Talk about two lovable characters. In my opinion, they make the movie! And (come to think of it) on this blog, my opinion IS the only one that counts! HA!

Incidentally, this is one of the few Christmas Movies I don't yet have (along with ELF and the Home Alone Movies)...and I'd love to have it for Christmas...hint hint!

Anyway, you should check this movie out this Christmas. It's perfect for kids of all ages, including the inner child within you!

#10 Little Women

Okay, I know I know, this isn't a Christmas movie! And some of you out in Blog-land might be annoyed at my suggestion. To which I reply: "Start you own blog then, cause I don't care!"

That being said, Little Women should really be considered a Christmas movie. It's a movie that's all about family. A movie that transcends generations, and deals with real life struggles. A movie we can all relate to. Not to mention it takes place during 2 different Christmases. Heck, they even sing Christmas Carols...if that doesn't qualify it, then I don't know what does!

Anyway, I watched it again last night, and it always reminds me of my sisters. How much we've changed over the years, and how many different "attitudes" we personified! And through all those "attitudes", how we still continued to love each other! If you have sisters like me, you'll completely understand the multiple layers of emotion that go hand-in-hand with growing up. It's just part of life. Sisterly life.

So my challenge for you today is to go watch this movie. Preferably with those sisters of yours!

#9 White Christmas

I started watching this movie after Casey and I got married. All the women in his family are big on old time musicals, and watch them quite a bit during the holidays (much to Casey's annoyance!). Casey does watch this movie with me every once in a while though...that is, if he's not playing video games, or reading a book, or on the computer, or paying bills, or doing dishes, or just plain busy, or have anything better to do (you get the idea!).

But regardless of Casey's feelings, I love watching this movie. It's such a great reminder of how we should go out of our way to give all that we can, to our friends and loved ones, whenever we get the chance.

And I absolutely love all the music! Especially this scene!

So if you've never watched White Christmas, I strongly recommend it. You won't be sorry (unless you tend to hate musicals...gasp!).

# 8 A Mom for Christmas

Another "gem" that I grew up watching! My parents still have the recorded TV version(you know the kind...with all the commercial breaks)! I haven't watched this movie in years, but I still think about it ever Christmas.

The movie itself is kinda cheesy, it centers around an 11 year old girl who's mom died when she was 3...and who's dad is a workaholic. When she receives a free wish for Christmas (from a department store wishing well), she decides that she wants a mom. Long story short, a mannequin comes to life (in the form of Olivia Newton-John) and eventually everyone lives happily ever after! AWWWW!!

#7 The Polar Express

Today's selection is in honor of my Mom. She LOVES this movie...and she watches it all winter long. Mostly because my nephew loves it too, but also because she loves the book (you would too if you were a teacher!).

And I can almost guarantee you that she will be showing it to her 3rd graders (again) this year!

I have to admit, there is something special about that little jingling bell!

On a separate note, the countdown has begun: 15 days till Casey is home!! WAAAHOOO!!!!

One Awful Christmas Movie

#6: Love Actually

There should be a disclaimer with this movie: who ever wrote it, was obviously a pervert, cause there are way too many boobs in it to be considered a Christmas Movie. It's set in present day London, and follows a slew of related characters for a few weeks leading up to Christmas. Half the movie is crap...seriously terrible! But the other half (mainly those scenes involving Hugh Grant and Bill Nighy) is great!

Casey and I have discussed this movie in great detail over the years, and I've come to the conclusion that really, the only reason I watch this movie, is because of Bill Nighy! I love every movie he's in...I can't help it, he's just plain awesome (in one of those saucy-Brit kind of ways!).

So honestly, the best way to enjoy this movie, is to watch clips on you tube...and ignore all the crappy scenes. Luckily for you I've posted my favorite scene of the movie below. It's not the full scene, but it's still pretty great!

Nothing like a good "service announcement" from an over-the-hill rock star!

Snow Miser - Heat Miser

#5: The Year Without a Santa Clause

Okay, two words: Miser Brothers! I love them! I don't know why, but I do! Maybe it's all the sisterly rivalry I grew up with (Love you Meg and Kel-bell!), but these two are by far my favorite Christmas characters!

It wouldn't be Christmas in my house without watching this movie...except I'm usually watching it alone, or next to a sleeping husband! Oh well, it will still remain one of my favorites!

Griswold Family Christmas!

Movie #4: Christmas Vacation

I watched this movie again last night, and I really can't think of a scene that I didn't like. It's so witty and all around awesome! Even the opening credits are great!

I love that it reminds me of Christmas growing up...having to share a bed with my annoying little sister who popped her ankles all night long until she fell asleep; then proceeded to kick me through out the night (thanks Kellie)! It reminds me of crazy huge family gatherings, where everyone was trying to talk over everyone else; and get food before it all ran out! It's hectic family gatherings like those, that leave the best memories!

I have to say though, if I had to pick a favorite scene, it would involve the oh-so-cool Todd and Margo! And if you don't know who Todd and Margo are, you need to go watch this movie right now!

Our 2010 Christmas Letter

Merry Christmas to all our family, friends, and loved ones!

"It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.”

2 Samuel 22:33

What a beautiful passage, and so fitting for the last year of our lives. 2010 brought about many changes for both Casey and me. Changes that will forever affect the rest of our lives: scary changes, big changes, and good changes.

When we started out this last year, Casey and I had been seeking out God’s guidance. We had been praying for direction (specifically concerning a career path for Casey), and we knew that whatever He put before us, we would follow. At the time I had been hoping for a simple desk job, 9-5, kind of career. But the beautiful thing about God is, he never settles for simple. He had a greater plan for us.

I can’t tell you the exact day, or the first sign that God gave us about the military. As much as I said I wanted to follow Him, I didn’t want to believe that the Air Force was God’s plan. I convinced myself that God would never want us to take that path; that surely, He had something else. But God was patient with us; He helped coax us into this new vision of a future. And over time, He convinced us of His love and guiding hand.

So in May, just a few weeks before our 5 year anniversary, Casey enlisted with the Kansas Air National Guard. All I can say is, WOW, I didn’t see that coming! It was an extremely special and exciting day for Casey…and a scary, scary day for me. But it was also a day of relief and joy, knowing that we were following the path God set before us.

The next few months were spent preparing ourselves mentally (me) and physically (Casey) for Casey’s Basic Training, starting mid August. I spent many a night crying myself to sleep, not sure how the future would pan out, or what life would look like. For those who know Casey and I best, you will know how “attached at the hip” (as my friend, Sarah, put it) Casey and I are. The thought of being separated was extremely terrifying to me. We were told to not expect many phone calls with each other, and that really our only means of communications would be letters. And that it would last until mid Oct. Scary.

But there were plenty of things to look forward to before August. For one thing, we helped welcome our second nephew into the world on July 26th. Maddox Rylan Cheek. The cutest, chubbiest, little monster in the world! His big brother Colton couldn’t be happier, nor could Mommy and Daddy! There were also birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate, along with spending as much down time as possible with each other. All these things helped cart us through the next few months, into August.

I won’t go into detail about how hard it was saying goodbye to Casey…I’m sure you could imagine. Let it just be known that thanks to God, my loving family, and friends, I was able to carry myself through to October. And Casey was able to rise to all the challenges set before him at Basic!

We were finally able to see each other again on October 14th, one of the happiest days of my life! And although we only got to spend 4 days together, it was pure joy.

From Basic, Casey shipped off to Tech. School in Biloxi, MS. He’ll be stationed there well into next year, but we have things to be grateful for in the mean time. For one, we can talk and Skype with each other every day. Second, he’ll be home for Christmas…the best Christmas gift I could ever receive! And third, I’ll be able to visit him down there every few months.

As for me, I’ve made an effort to keep myself busy during Casey’s absence. I’m involved in 2 Bible Studies, a Wed. night class at my church (where I am by far the youngest one there!), and I now watch my nephews a couple hours ever week! I keep myself very, very busy. My hobbies have multiplied in Casey’s absence, and it’s enough to keep me occupied and happy! Add to that two very needy dogs, and you’ll get an idea of how my time is spent!

The most beautiful thing about this whole last year is God’s unfailing guidance and love. We truly take joy in God’s word from Genesis 2:24.

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”

Even absent physically from one another, we still feel each other’s presence because of God’s company in our lives. What a joy in Jesus! It is this reassurance that will help carry us through the next year, and the future beyond!

I pray that your last year was one of joy too! Wishing the best for you and your loved ones this Christmas season! And remembering that a Savior was born!

Angie

The Grinch!

Movie #2...and 3: The Grinch...and How the Grinch Stole Christmas

I can't really tell you which version I like better. Jim Carrey is amazing in the live version, but the cartoon has all the original greatness! So every year we always end up watching both!

And Who wouldn't like this song:

You're a mean one, Mister Grinch
You really are a heel,
You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mister Grinch,

You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

You're a monster, Mister Grinch,
Your heart's an empty hole,
Your brain is full of spiders, you've got garlic in your soul, Mister Grinch,

I wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You're a vile one, Mister Grinch,
You have termites in your smile,
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mister Grinch,

Given a choice between the two of you I'd take the ... seasick crocodile!

You nauseate me, Mister Grinch,
With a nauseous super "naus",
You're a crooked dirty jockey and you drive a crooked hoss, Mister Grinch,

You're a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich, with arsenic sauce!

You're a foul one, Mister Grinch,
You're a nasty wasty skunk,
Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk, Mister Grinch,

The three words that describe you are as follows, and I quote, "Stink, Stank, Stunk!"

You're a rotter, Mister Grinch,
You're the king of sinful sots,
Your heart's a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots, Mister Grinch,

Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots!

25 Days of Christmas Movies

Last year Casey and I did the unthinkable...we threw a 25-days-of-Christmas movies marathon. That's right, 25 days, 25 movies (actually we might have watched more!), and 2 crazy adults! I'm not sure I would recommend it to everyone, it seriously took up way too much time, but at least now I can say I did it!

So this year I thought I would share some of my favorites. I don't know how many movies I'll get through. Some were crappy to begin with, and not worth the time. But for now here is my first movie:

#1 A Garfield Christmas
This was one of my all time favorites growing up! For all of you people born in the 80's, you'll understand the awesomeness of this movie! My favorite scene is when Garfield snuggles up on Grandma's lap in the rocking chair...totally melts my heart! There's just something about this movie that reminds me of childhood. Who could ask for a happier memory?

So here's your challenge: What is your favorite Christmas movie? Let me know, and I'll try to incorporate them in too!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

I've been getting super excited about Christmas this year. For one thing Casey will be home, and I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas gift! I'm seriously giddy, and I'm counting down the days till he's here.

But it hasn't been all easy and exciting. At times its emotionally straining being away from Casey. Thanksgiving was great with the families, but extra hard without my hubby there. We joked later that it wasn't like we really ever spent that much time together anyways on Thanksgiving (I'm always cooking up a storm, in the kitchen, with the girls...and Casey is always hiding somewhere, "pretending" to take a nap so he can get out of dishes!). But still, I missed having him there.

I made it through, though (Thank you, JESUS!!), and now I can get ready for Christmas WITH Casey. The Christmas decorations are all up (minus the outside lights...Hint Hint to all males in my family!) And I'm almost completely done with Christmas gifts.

I decided I was going to get creative with some of our Christmas gifts this year. Partly, because plane tickets are expensive; and partly, because I needed a project. So here is a sneak peak at what I've been working on. I very much doubt you'll be able to figure it out from this picture...but have fun trying. I'm not even going to say who it's for. MWAHAHAHA!!
I'll try to post pictures soon from Thanksgiving. There pretty much all of Maddox! He's starting to smile ALL the time now, and I couldn't resist taking more pictures!
